What is IELTS

IELTS is an acronym for International English Language Testing System, IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).

Why is it needed

The Academic format is, broadly speaking, for those who want to study or train in an English-speaking university or Institutions of Higher and Further Education. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test.

Academic – Institutions of Higher and Further Education

The GRE revised General Test, introduced in August 2011, features a new test-taker friendly design and new question types. It more closely reflects the kind of thinking you’ll do in graduate or business school and demonstrates that you are ready for graduate-level work.

Verbal Reasoning

Measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and recognize relationships among words and concepts.

Quantitative Reasoning

Measures problem-solving ability, focusing on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.

Analytical Writing

Measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills, specifically your ability to articulate and support complex ideas clearly and effectively.

General Training – for school, work or migration

The General Training format focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. It is typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries to do secondary education, work experience or training programs.

Different study and migration paths require different IELTS test modules and band scores.

What is included?

IELTS has four parts – Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are done in one sitting. The Speaking test may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests

Validity

IELTS test scores are valid for two years after the testing year in which you tested.

How do I send my scores to an institution?

One score report for you (electronic only unless you requested a paper copy) and up to four official score reports that ETS will send directly to the institutions or agencies you selected. Score reports are sent electronically or mailed to recipients approximately 13 days after the test date.
